Andy Warhol Childhood
Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the fourth child of Ondrej Warhola and Ulya, whose first child was born in their country and died before their migration to the U.S. His parents were migrant workers from Mik (now Mikov) in the northern Slovakia, then part of Austro-Hungarian. Warhol’s father emigrated to the United States in 1914, and his mother followed him in 1921 after the death of the grandparents of Andy Warhol. Warhol’s father worked in a coal mine. New York Museum of Modern Art hosted a Symposium on Pop Art in December 1962, in which artists such as Andy Warhol for “capitulation were attacked” consumers.
